21 Sep Bison Solar Panels Can Weather the Storm
It’s Hurricane Season in Florida. We saw the impact of Hurricane Irma first hand a few weeks ago, and now most of Florida is starting the rebuilding process. However, if you’re looking for solar energy users with damage to their solar panels, you’ll be surprised to know that there are few, if any, solar users with severe damage.
Why? You ask, do we have thousands of customers whose solar panels weathered the storm with no damage and are in full working order? We’ll tell you!
Our solar panels are made to withstand approximately 140 miles-an-hour wind speeds and up to 1 inch of hail falling at a speed of 50 miles-per-hour. Think about that! To see even minimal damage to your solar panels a hurricane would have to hit South Florida as a strong category four storm. The good thing for us is that storms that start in tropics often weaken on their path, and weaken even more once they make landfall. Hurricane Irma hit the lower areas of Florida as a weaker category four and was a category three by the time it reached us – thank goodness!
As for hail, we do not tend to get much of it in Florida, seeing as we rarely have temperatures cold enough to produce hail.
The SunShot Initiative
The SunShot Initiative was developed by the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, and it aims to reduce the cost of solar energy for Americans. In addition, this office also lends its support to initiatives that are striving to improve the durability of solar panels. With the SunShot initiative, researchers from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) can get the necessary funding to be a part of the International PV Quality Assurance Task Force. This task force’s top priority is to design and regulate the standards for solar energy technologies. Here at Bison Roofing & Solar, we strive to make sure all of our solar energy systems are operating at these standards of peak performance.
